Kodak Black, also known as Bill Kahan Kapri, was born Dieuson Octave on June 11, 1997. He is an American rapper who gained influence through his hit single “No Flocking,” released in 2014.

Early Life:

Dieuson Octave was born in Pompano Beach, Florida on June 11, 1997 to Marcelene Octave, a Haitian immigrant.

Black later changed his name to Bill Kahan Kapri following legal procedures.

Black was raised in Golden Acres by his mother. He took rapping seriously in primary school. He would often visit local trap houses to record music after school hours.

In fifth grade, Kodak faced expulsion from school for fighting. He got arrested during middle school for auto theft. He was known mainly by the nicknames “Lil Black” and “Black during his younger years.”

Upon joining Instagram, he picked “Kodak Black” as his username, which became his stage name to date.

Career:

In 2009 when Kodak Black was 12, he became part of Brutal Youngz, a rap group. He joined the group under the stage name “Jā€“Black.”

Afterward, he joined another local rap group called The Kolyons. In December 2013, Black released his introductory mixtape titled “Project Baby.”

“Project Baby” was followed by another mixtape in December 2014 titled “Heart of the Projects,” and in December 2015, he released the mixtape “Institution.”

In October 2015, Black signed a deal with Atlantic Records, and in May 2016, Black and fellow rapper Lil Uzi announced a partnership for a tour. Black, however, ended up not appearing.

Black appeared on French Montana’s single “Lockjaw.” The single peaked at number 23 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

He released “Zombie” the following year, featuring NLE Choppa and DB Omerta. February 14, 2020, saw the release of “Because of You,” and on November 11, 2020, Black released his third album, “Bill Israel.”

After his release from prison, he released “Last Day In,” where he talks about his release from prison on January 23, 2021. The album was followed by the single “Every Balmain,” released on February 6, 2021.

Black also featured on Lil Yachty’s “Hit Bout It” single.

To pay tribute to his Haitian root, Black released “Haitian Boy Kodak” on May 14, 2021. To celebrate his 24th birthday on June 11, 2021, he released “Happy Birthday Kodak.”

Controversies:

In June 2017, Kodak acknowledged his preference for light-skinned women over dark-skinned women on his Instagram handle. Some negative responses provoked Black to delete his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

In April 2019, he got entangled in another controversy when he showed interest in having sexual relations with late rapper Nipsey Hussle’s girlfriend, Lauren London.

On April 7, he gave a weak apology to Lauren London but apologized more in-depth during his time in prison.

On February 12, 2022, Black was shot during a fight in Los Angeles.
