Established in 1970 in Boston, Aerosmith is an American rock band consisting of Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, and Joey Krammer. The group is sometimes called “the Bad Boys from Boston” and “America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.”
Their music genre includes hard rock, blues rock, rock and roll, glam metal, and heavy metal. They have been active since 1970 till date.
In 1964, Steven Tyler created his band, which he called the Strangeurs and later Chain Reaction. In the meantime, Hamilton and Perry had formed the Jam Band.
In September 1969, after moving to Boston, Massachusetts, Perry and Hamilton met Joey Krammer, who joined the Jam Band.
In 1970, the Jam Band and Chain Reaction performed at the same gig, causing Tyler to fall in love with the Jam Band, desiring to make both bands play together.
In October 1970, all members of both bands agreed on terms, and the new band was formed. The band lived together at 1325 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. Ray Tabano, a childhood friend of Tyler, was later hired by the band as the rhythm guitarist.
The band under the stage name ‘Aerosmith’ had their first appearance together in Mendon, Massachusetts, at Nipmuc Regional High School on November 6, 1970. The following year, Ray Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford.
After the band’s formation, they began recording minor success performing live shows. They signed a deal with Frank Connely and in 1972 secured a management deal with David Kerbs and Steve Leber.
In mid-1972, Aerosmith signed under Columbia and released a debut album ‘Aerosmith’ in January 1973. The album reached number 166, hitting gold status and selling two million copies before being certified double platinum.
After a series of tours, a second album, ‘Get Your Wings,’ was released in 1974. A third album ‘Toys In the Attic’ was released in 1975.’ The album made Aerosmith cosmopolitan stars.
Toys In The Attic became Aerosmith’s best-selling studio album in the US. The album’s success was followed by a tour giving the band more recognition.
In 1976, they released their fourth album titled ‘Rocks,’ which sold over four million copies. A fifth album was released in 1977 titled ‘Draw the Line,’ which sold two million copies.
Soon, drug misuse and the rapid life of recording and touring began affecting the performance adversely. Tyler and Perry were called “the Toxic Twins” due to their famous abuse of drugs.
On July 28, 1979, the band performed at the Cleveland Stadium, during which an argument broke out between Joe Perry’s wife, Elissa, who threw a glass of milk at Terry, Hamilton’s wife.
The issue ended in a terrible argument between Tyler and Perry, resulting in Perry leaving Aerosmith. After his exit from the band, he established a side project called The Joe Perry Project.
Soon after, Brad Whitford also left the band and teamed up with Perry. After watching Aerosmith perform at the Orpheum Theater in Boston on February 14, 1984, discussions about a reunion began. A couple of months later, the actual members of Aerosmith formally reunited.
Although Aerosmith had gained popularity in the 1970s, it wasn’t till the late 1980s and 1990s did they begin receiving awards.
The group won the Soul Train Music Award for Best Rap Single in 1987. They won their first-ever Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals in 1990.
The band ranks as the ninth most successful artist, winning four awards in the Best Rock Video category and three awards in the Viewer’s Choice Award category.
They have also won awards in the Video of The Year, Best Video from a Film, and Best Group Video categories. Aerosmith won four Billboard Music Awards and sixteen Boston Music Awards during their active years.
In 1990, the band was included in Hollywood’s Rock Walk, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and the mtvICON award in 2002.
