Stray Kids, often shortened as SKZ, is a South Korean boy band formed in 2017 through its reality show. A boy band of eight, the group members include Lee Know, Hyunyin, Changbin, Bang Chan, Seungmin, Felix, Han, and I.N.
Stray Kids was initially a nine-member group but one of its members, Woojin, left in October 2017. In January 2018, the group released an EP mixtape but formally debuted on March 25 with the Extended Play “I Am Not.”
History:
In August 2017, JYPE announced the release of a reality survival show with its titled “Stray Kids,” released two months later.
Before its debut on October 17, JYP Entertainment released “Hellevator,” the show’s first music video. Following the launch of the show’s website, a debut EP titled Mixtape was released, containing seven tracks that were performed on the show.
The group organized their debut showcase called Stray Kids Unveil on March 25 at Jangchung Arena.
The official release of their EP, “I Am Not,” was released the next day.
The song was at number 4 on the Goan Album Chart, selling above 54,000 visible copies.
Stray Kids appeared at ICON Japan on April 14, 2018. The act was the group’s first performance overseas.
JYPE announced the band’s second showcase on July 12. The showcase was held at Kyung Hee University’s Grand Peace Palace on August 5.
They released a second EP, “I Am Who,” the next day.
On October 4, a third showcase was announced at Olympic Hall on October 21. The showcase was accompanied by a new EP release titled “I Am You.”
In 2019, Stray Kids began their showcase tour, which kicked off in Bangkok on January 19. In March, the band also organized their national promotional Hi Stay Tour, which took place in Busan, Incheon, Daejeon, with a finale held in Seoul on April 20.
On March 5, JYPE announced that their fourth EP, Clè 1: Miroh was on its way to be released on March 25, 2019, to mark the group’s debut first anniversary.
On February 10, 2022, it was announced that the band had signed a deal with Republic Records. On March 18, a sixth EP, “Oddinary,” was released with a lead single titled “Maniac.”
The EP topped charts in South Korea, Poland, Finland, and the United States, becoming the group’s first album listed on the Billboard 200, making them the third Korean act to top the chart.
Accolades:
Between 2018 and 2019, all first four EP’s of Stray Kids earned them six new artists awards, including Best New Male Artist during the 33rd Golden Disc Awards, Rookie of The Year during the 28th Seoul Music Awards, and the 2018 Asian Artist Awards respectively.
Their second EP, “I Am Who,” earned their first Bonsang nomination. The single “My Pace” also got a Global Fan’s Choice nomination at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, 2018.
Clè 1: Miroh offered Stray Kids their first Daesang nomination during the 29th Seoul Music Awards.
Stray Kids have also received various endorsements, including a modeling endorsement for Jambangee Jeans.
