Who is Wizkid?

Wizkid is a famous Nigerian singer and songwriter and is a prominent figure in the Afrobeats music community. Many regard him as one of the best African artists of today.

Wizkid’s real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun. However, he is known as Wizkid in the professional world. He started recording music as a child. At 11, he collaborated with Glorious Five and released an album.

In 2009, Empire Mates Entertainment signed him. In 2011, he dropped his debut album, Superstar. It contained the song, Holla at Your Boy which became a huge hit. It gained him widespread recognition. He also released a few other hit singles, Don’t Dull and Tease Me/Bad Guys.

In 2014, he came up with a second album, Ayo, which included the song Jaiye Jaiye. He became an international singer in 2016 after collaborating with Drake on the hit, One Dance. The track broke several records and charted no. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, making Wizkid the only Afrobeats artist to have his name in the Guinness World Records.

In 2017, he signed a contract with RCA Records and dropped his third album, Sounds from the Other Side. The album included the hit song, Come Closer, featuring Drake.

After releasing several hits and breaking multiple records, Wizkid became the most streamed Nigerian artist on Spotify. As of 2021, he received over 3.4 billion streams on the platform.

Wizkid Early Life

Wizkid was born on July 16, 1990, in Surulere, Lagos. He grew up with his twelve siblings. He was interested in music from a very young age and even formed a group with his church friends. They released only one album before disbanding.

Until 2006, Wizkid used the stage name, Lil Prince. In 2009, he struck a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment. The same year, he dropped out of college to pursue his career in music.

Wizkid launched his debut album, Superstar, in 2009. The lead single from Holla at Your Boy album became a big hit.

Over the years, Wizkid has collaborated with many well-known artists. With every album he released, he became more famous. Today, he is one of the top Nigerian artists in the world. He has received four Grammy nominations and won one of them.
