For the uninitiated, Fleetwood Mac is an American-British rock band formed in 1967 in London.

Band Members

The founding members of Fleetwood Mac were drummer Mick Fleetwood, guitarists Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green. Bassist John McVie joined the band before the release of their debut album.

Guitarist Danny Kirwan joined the band in 1968.

Christine Perfect, who worked as a session musician on the band’s second album, joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 as a vocalist and keyboardist. She joined the band after her marriage to the band’s bassist John McVie.

Music Career

Fleetwood Mac released their self-titled debut album in 1968.

The band started as a British blues band and created hit singles around 1968-69. Some of the band’s hit numbers include Albatross, Man of the World, and Oh Well.

The three guitarists from the band quit the band in the early 1970s, and vocalist Dave Walker and guitarists Bob Weston and Bob Welch replaced them. The band was without any guitarist or a lead male singer after Walker, Welch, and Weston left Fleetwood Mac around 1974.

Fleetwood hired Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham as the new vocalist and lead guitarist, respectively, in 1974. The band got more of a pop-rock vibe post the addition of Nicks and Buckingham.

They released their tenth album titled ‘Fleetwood Mac’ or ‘The White Album’ in 1975. The album managed to reach the number one position in the U.S.

Their 1977 studio album titled ‘Rumours’ made a sale of 40 million copies globally and became one of the best-selling albums in music history. It included four Top 10 singles and ruled the American music charts for 31 weeks.

‘Rumours’ ruled music charts in other countries and won the year’s album award at the Grammys 1978.

The band members also faced hardships personally as some broke up, but they continued to stay together as a band and recorded new music as before. The band’s line-up remained the same for three more albums.

Nicks and Buckingham quit the band in the late 1980s. Other vocal artists and guitarists replaced them. The band’s original members reunited in 1997 and released their album titled ‘The Dance.’ Christine quit the band in 1998 but worked with them as a session musician.

Their last studio album, ‘Say You Will,’ was released in 2003.

In 2014, Christine McVie rejoined the band in a full-time capacity. The band fired Buckingham in 2018. Neil Finn and Mike Campbell replaced him.

Accolades

Fleetwood Mac received the honor of having a star named after them on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1979.

The band received the Brit Award for their contribution to music in 1998. Fleetwood Mac got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the same year.

The Recording Academy awarded them the prestigious MusiCares Person of the Year in 2018. This award was for their philanthropic works and their artistic achievements in music.
