What is Deep Purple?

Deep Purple is a popular English rock band that entered the scene in 1968. They are one of the pioneers of modern complex rock music and heavy metal. However, they started their journey as a progressive and psychedelic rock band. Their style of music has changed over the years, and fans love it.

The band was active from 1968 to 1976. After a few years gap, they revived the band in 1984, and since then, they have been happening. However, the band members have changed. The present members are Ian Paice, Ian Gillan, Don Airey, Roger Glover, and Simon McBride.

The past members of the band include Rod Evans, Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Nick Simper, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Joe Satriani, Joe Lynn Turner, and Steve Morse.

The most successful line-up was Ian Gillan as the vocalist, Jon Lord as the keyboardist, Roger Glover as the bassist, Ian Paice as the drummer, and Richie Blackmore as the guitarist.

Deep Purple History

In 1967, Chris Curtis, former drummer of Searchers, contacted Tony Edwards in the hope of forming a new group. He wanted to build a ‘supergroup’ where the band members would get on and off. His wish led to the formation of a band under the name Roundabout.

The group members included Ritchie Blackmore, Job Lord, Chris Curtis, and two others.

Unfortunately, Roundabout didn’t do well, and it changed, replacing Blackmore, Curtis, and Lord. The new group was named Deep Purple, with Ian Paice as the drummer and Roger Glover as the bassist.

Deep Purple made its debut in Denmark in 1968. It took them several weeks of hustle to achieve success. In 1969, the band released their first single, “Hush”, which ranked no.4 on the U.S. singles chart.

Deep Purple is considered one of the hardest-working bands and pioneers of rock music and heavy metal. To date, the band have sold over 100 million albums worldwide.

Their influence is so huge that British Radio Station Planet Rock crowned them the “5th Most Influential Band Ever.” Not only that, but they also ranked no.22 on the list of “Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.”

In 2008, the band received the “Legend Award” at the World Music Awards.

Rock and Roll Hall introduced them of Fame in 2016.
