Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, also known as Halsey, is an American singer born on September 29, 1994. With the assistance of social media, she has been gaining attention to self-released music. 2014 saw her signing with Astralwerks, and later that year, she released her debut EP, ROOM 93.
The distinctive tone of her voice makes her stand out. In 2020 Halsey sold over 1 million albums, and her US streams topped 6 Billion.
Career Beginnings
Halsey began her career at the age of 17. She posted her videos to social media sites such as youtube and Kik, particularly Tumblr, under the seventeen black username in 2012.
Taylor Swift’s relationship with Harry Styles inspired her song “I Knew You Were Trouble,” which she penned as a parody.
The Halsey Street station on the New York City Subway in Brooklyn (where she spent a lot of time as a teenager) inspired Halsey to pick her stage name.
Onset Of A Music Career
Halsey’s debut studio album was Badlands, released in 2015. It received Double Platinum certification, as did its singles “Colors” and “Gasoline” from RIAA.
She was featured on the Chainsmokers’ hit “Closer” in 2016, which went to number one in over ten countries. Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017) was her second studio album, and it featured more “radio-friendly” songs than her previous efforts.
The singles ‘Now or Never’ and ‘Bad at Love’ charted in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. The latter also managed to reach the top 5. Manic (2020), Halsey’s third studio album, was her best-selling album internationally. Its lead hit, “Without Me,” was her most successful single as a lead artist.
If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power (2021), Halsey’s fourth studio album, veered away from her previous sound in favor of a harsher industrial sound and generally garnered excellent reviews.
Musical Breakthrough
Halsey’s first studio album, Badlands, was released on August 28, 2015. She characterized Badlands as a concept album about a dystopian future civilization known as “The Badlands,” which she said was a metaphor for her mental state at the time, with each song having a distinct meaning for her. When Halsey was 19, she authored all of the songs on the album.
Halsey described the album as lacking a “true radio hit.” Music critics were enthusiastic about it.
Accomplishments
Her awards include four Billboard Music Awards, one American Music Award, one GLAAD Media Award, an MTV Video Music Award, two Grammy Awards, and Songwriter of the Year by BMI Film & TV Awards in 2021.
She was also on Time magazine’s annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2020.
