Rolling Stones were a part of the significant cultural movements of the early 60s and 70s, such as the British Invasion” movement and counterculture movement.

Their impressive initial lineup included Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts. With a whopping sales of over 200 million records worldwide and is one of the most selling music artists of all time.

Formation

Rolling Stones’ key members, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, were childhood friends and schoolmates. Along with Dick Taylor, who would later become the founding member of “Pretty Things,” started a garage band called the “Blues Boys.”

The Blues Boys were, as the name suggests, more into “Rhythm and Blues” music. The group played around a few clubs in their native Kent and nearby locales of England.

Music Career

In 1962, the original lineup came together to join the band and changed their name to “Rolling Stone.” The band initially played Blues and Jazz songs.

In 1963, Andrew Loog Oldham was brought in as their manager, and he decided against the band wearing suits like the Beatles.

He made them wear uncoordinated and original clothes to give a different vibe.

The bans signed a record deal with Decca Records, and the cover of Chuck Berry’s “Come On” was Rolling Stone’s first single. It came out in 1963. The same year they went on an all UK tour.

Rolling Stones came with their second single, “I wanna be your Man,” written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles during this tour.

In the initial years, Brian Jones played the role of the leader before descending into drug abuse.

Rolling Stone’s first US Tour did not do them much good. But in 1965, their LPs such as “12 X 5”, “The Rolling Stones No. 2,” etc., turned the tides and brought them into the limelight.

“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” became their first International Hit and the “Decembers Children” became an instant hit.

Rolling Stone’s Album “Aftermath” only contained songs penned entirely by the Jagger-Richard combo. 1966-67 peaked the band’s popularity around the world.

But during the time, the authorities were hounding them over their extensive use of drugs. A series of drug raids and arrests further boosted the brand’s popularity.

In 1968 they came out with “Beggars Banquet,” which featured songs like Street Fighting Man. However, Brian Jones started to detach as his drug use increased.

In 1969, he left the band, and within a month, he drowned in his pool. His death became part of the Forever 27 Club mythos.

Mick Taylor replaced Jones, and the band picked up heavily after the tragedy. During this era, Rolling Stones were named “the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.”

Their album “Let it Bleed,” which featured hits like “Gimme Shelter,” was their last sixties album.

As the new decade began, the band came out with their recording label and studio “Rolling Stones Records.” The logo was inspired by Hindu goddess Kali’s “Out stuck Tongue.”

The eighties peaked their fame, and the band came out with various music styles. But there was also a major falling out between Richards and Jagger.

The band went on creating music for six decades and inspired many musicians and bands worldwide.

Awards and Accolades

Rolling Stones won numerous awards and accolades throughout their career.

Rolling Stones were inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” in 1989. They have won 3 Grammys and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Billboard Magazine named them one of the “Greatest Artists of All Time.”
