Judas Priest is a heavy metal band from Birmingham, England, established in 1969. The Band has produced 18 studio albums, six live albums, seven compilation albums, 29 singles, ten video albums, and 21 music videos.

Bassist Ian Hill, drummer Scott Travis, vocalist Rob Halford, and guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner make up the current lineup.

After guitarist K. K. Downing left the Band in 2011, only bassist Ian Hill remains a founding member. Over 50 million albums have been sold worldwide by Judas Priest, including 12 million copies sold in the United States.

Ian Hill(1969–present)- Ian Frank Hill (born January 20, 1951) is a British musician who is most famous for being the bassist and backbone of the British heavy metal band Judas Priest.

Rob Halford(1973–1992, 2003–present)- Robert John Arthur Halford is an English singer and songwriter born on August 25, 1951. He is the main singer of the heavy metal band Judas Priest, for which he won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010. Fans have given him the moniker “Metal God.”

Glenn Tipton(1974–present)- Glenn Raymond Tipton is an English guitarist born on October 25, 1947. He is popularly known as one of the lead guitarists for the heavy metal band Judas Priest and is famed for his sophisticated playing style and classically influenced solos.

Scott Travis(1989–1992, 1997–present)- Mark Scott Travis (born September 6, 1961) is a drummer for the heavy metal band Judas Priest and Thin Lizzy’s Irish rock band. He was also a longstanding member of Racer X’s American heavy metal band.

Richie Faulkner(2011–present)- Richard Ian Faulkner (born January 1, 1980) is an English musician who has been a part of Judas Priest’s lead guitar lineup since 2011, replacing founding member K. K. Downing. Faulkner’s other collaborators are Lauren Harris, Christopher Lee, Voodoo Six, Dirty Deeds, and Ace Mafia.

Al Atkins- Allan John Atkins (born October 14, 1947) is an English heavy metal vocalist mostly known for being the founding member and lead vocalist of Judas Priest.

K.K. Downing- Kenneth Keith Downing Jr. is an English musician born on October 27, 1951. He is a former guitarist for the Band.

Downing’s strong, rock-influenced guitar style includes solos and duel leads with Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton.

Alan Moore- Alan “Skip” Moore (born January 1, 1950) is a British musician known for being Judas Priest’s third official drummer. He continued to play with different “scratch bands.”He eventually stopped making music and sank into obscurity.

Simon Phillips-Simon Phillips (born February 6, 1957) is an English drummer, composer, and record producer located in the United States. He was the drummer for Toto from 1992 to 2014. He played with rock bands in the 1970s and 1980s.

John Hinch- John Frederick Hinch was a British drummer from Lichfield, Staffordshire, who died on April 29, 2021. He was the drummer in an early lineup of the heavy metal band Judas Priest from 1973 to 1975. Hinch was a compact jazz-rock drummer with a friendly approach.

Les Binks- James Leslie Binks (born in Portadown, Northern Ireland) is a heavy metal drummer from Northern Ireland. From 1977 until 1979, he was the drummer for Judas Priest.

Dave Holland- David Holland was an English heavy metal drummer born in Northampton and died on January 16, 2018. Holland is most known for his work with the Band Trapeze (1969–1979) and Judas Priest (1979–1999).

Holland left Judas Priest in 1989 because of personal difficulties (health and family troubles) and artistic disagreements.

Tim Owens- Timothy S. “Ripper” Owens is an American heavy metal singer. He gained fame as the lead singer of Judas Priest before joining Iced Earth.

The onset of the Musical Career

The Band recorded a two-song demo, “Good Time Woman” and “We’ll Stay Together,” after performing in Walsall in 1969. Immediate signed the Band to a three-album deal, but the label fell out of business before the album could be released. Judas Priest embarked on their first European tour in 1974, then returned to England to sign with Gull Records.

Musical Breakthrough

Killing Machine (1978) was followed by Unleashed in the East, a live recording from the accompanying tour (1979). It was the first of many platinum albums for Judas Priest.

“You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’,” from the 1982 album Screaming for Vengeance, became a powerful radio smash in the United States.

This album had songs like “Electric Eye” and “Riding on the Wind,” which proved to be popular live. Bob Halligan Jr’s music “(Take These) Chains” was published as a single and garnered a lot of exposure.

This album was certified twice platinum.

Priest’s popularity lasted until the mid-1980s.

Accomplishments

Despite a drop in popularity in the mid-1990s, the Band has resurfaced with international tours, induction into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2006, a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and songs appearing in video games like Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series.

Judas Priest got inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

They were nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 but were denied, which the Band criticized.

In August 2018, they got admitted into the Hall of Heavy Metal History at the Wacken festival. “For decades of hard labor and devotion to heavy metal, an art form they helped build,” said Founder/CEO Pat Gesualdo.
