Gorillaz (founded in 1998) is a music and animation project founded by Blur’s Damon Albarn and Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett. Aside from the music, Gorillaz also includes a ‘virtual’ band of 2-D members named 2D (vocalist and keyboardist), Murdoc Niccals (bass), Noodle (guitar and vocals), and Russel Hobbs (drums and percussion).

Albarn is the primary musical benefactor, with a rotating crew of musicians contributing.

Creation

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett shared a residence in Westbourne Grove, London, in 1998, and this was the beginning of the Gorillaz project.

‘Ghost Train,’ their first song written together, was published as the B-side to ‘Rock the House.’ Albarn, Dan the Automator, and Del the Funkee Homosapien comprised the original trio of musicians. Albarn previously collaborated with Dan the Automator on Deltron 3030’s debut album.

Career

Gorillaz made their debut with the Tomorrow Comes Today EP, released in 2000. The following year saw the release of the single “Clint Eastwood.”

The self-titled debut album from Gorillaz was released in March 2001. The band also created charts of Darkness, a half-hour mockumentary featuring Krishnan Guru-Murthy.

Later that year, Gorillaz released their collaboration with D12 (minus Eminem and Terry Hall). The September 11th terrorist attacks inspired the song ‘911’.

Gorillaz performed with Phi Life Cypher at the 2002 BRIT Awards using 3D animation. Despite being nominated for six awards, they came up empty-handed at the end of the evening.

Spacemonkeyz released Laika Come Home, a dub remix album, in 2002. Later that year, Gorillaz released Phase One: Celebrity Take Down, a DVD. It included a mockumentary about Charts of Darkness and promotional videos for the band.

In 2004, Gorillaz released the video’ Rock It’ and announced the release of a new album, which Danger Mouse would produce good Inc.,’ which was released in May 2005, and the album, Demon Days.

Although the album peaked at number one in the UK, it began to fall off the charts following the release of the next single, ‘DARE,’ featuring Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays. The third single from Demon Days was ‘Dirty Harry,’ and the final single was ‘Kids with Guns / ‘El Manana.’

Due to the high cost of using 3D holograms of the band, a planned tour was eventually canceled. A DVD titled Phase Two: Slowboat to Hades was released in October 2006.

A few months later, Gorillaz’s illustrated autobiography, Rise of the Ogre, was released. Bananaz, another documentary film about the Gorillaz, was released in April 2009 on the Babelgum website.

The title of Gorillaz’s next studio album, Plastic Beach, was released in March 2010. Snoop Dogg, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash, De La Soul, Lou Reed, Mark E. Smith, and Bobby Womack were among the guests on the album.
