Premise
The idea for SpongeBob SquarePants came from an unpublished book by Hillenburg titled ‘The Intertidal Zone,’ which he had written in 1989 to educate his students about life under the sea. Hillenburg started work on the series in 1996, and a pilot was shown to the heads at Nickelodeon in 1997.
After arguments about the characters, Nickelodeon aired a preview for SpongeBob SquarePants following the Kids’ Choice Awards in 1999. The series had an official premiere on July 17, 1999. The series received global acclaim, and Nickelodeon renewed it for a fourteenth season in March 2022.
The setting for the series is a fictional underwater city named Bikini Bottom, located under the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Multi-colored fish, who live in buildings in the shape of ship funnels and use boatmobiles for transportation, populate Bikini Bottom.
Some of the recurring locations in the series include the residences of SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick; restaurants- Krusty Krab and Chum Bucket; the Treedome, Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, Shady Shoals Rest Home, a popular beach hangout named Goo Lagoon and a seagrass meadow called Jellyfish Fields.
SpongeBob SquarePants also features sky flowers- they are similar to clouds and replicate the flower prints on Hawaiian shirts.
