Sex And The City is a romantic drama series that aired on HBO from June 1998 to February 2004. Created by Darren Star, the series is an adaptation of a newspaper column and book series by Candace Bushnell.
The series had six seasons and 94 episodes. Michael Patrick King and several other producers, directors, and screenwriters contributed to the making of the series.
Cast
The lead cast of Sex And The City included Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York, Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes.
Premise
Set in New York City, the series follows the lives of four close-knit women who confide in each other about their sex lives. Three women from the group are in their mid-thirties, while one is in her forties.
Over the seasons, the show touched upon several social issues such as feminity, safe Sex, sexuality, and promiscuity. The topics discussed in the series were not only relevant but needed open discussion.
Sex And The City also explored the friendships and romantic liaisons of the lead cast. The writer omitted the early lives of the lead characters deliberately to explore their social lives from four different perspectives.
Reception
The show Sex And The City was one of the highest-rated dramas on HBO; it was instrumental in increasing HBO’s popularity.
Due to its bold themes and characters, the series received both acclaim and criticism from the audience and critics.
The show significantly influenced the global fashion scene with Manolo Blahnik shoes, nameplate necklaces, visible bra straps, and flower corsages becoming in vogue.
Franchise And Future
Two feature films- Sex And The City and ‘Sex And The City 2- were released in 2008 and 2010, respectively. A third film was canceled and later on turned into a television series.
A prequel series titled ‘The Carrie Diaries’ featuring a younger Carrie Bradshaw aired on The CW from January 2013 to January 2014. The show had two seasons.
A sequel series titled ‘And Just Like That’ aired on HBO Max in December 2012. It is the first series not to feature Kim Cattrall’s character.
Accolades
Sex And The City ranked number five on the ‘New TV Classics’ list by Entertainment Weekly. It was one of the money churners for HBO.
Time Magazine and TV Guide have named the series one of the best television series in 2007 and 2013, respectively.
Sex And The City received nominations for a majority of prestigious awards. It amassed 210 nominations, including 54 Emmy Award nominations, 11 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, and 24 Golden Globe Award nominations.
Out of 210 nominations, Sex And The City won 55 awards- seven Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and eight Golden Globes.
The show also won awards at American Cinema Editors Awards, AFI Awards, BMI Film & TV Awards, Cine Golden Eagles Awards, Costume Designers Guild Awards, Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Directors Guild of America Awards, Golden Reel Awards, Gracie Awards, Online Film & Television Association Awards, and Satellite Awards among others.
