Premiered in January 2016, Lucifer is a fantasy drama series based on a comic book character by the same name. Lucifer from DC Comics, around whom the series revolves, was created by Neil Gaiman, Mike Dringenberg, and Sam Kieth.

The character Lucifer first appeared in The Sandman comic book series. His popularity prompted Vertigo imprint to publish a comic book series portraying Lucifer as the protagonist.

DC Entertainment, Jerry Bruckheimer Television, and Warner Bros. Television produced the television series.

The series initially ran on the Fox network for its initial three seasons, after which the network canceled it due to poor ratings. Streaming giant, Netflix, picked up Lucifer for its platform, where it enjoyed high viewership.

Lucifer had six seasons, three on Fox Network and three on Netflix. With 93 episodes, the series ran from January 2016 to September 2021.

Cast

Lucifer boasts of an ensemble cast with Tom Ellis playing the titular role of Lucifer Morningstar.

The supporting cast includes Lauren German playing Detective Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside playing Amenadiel, Kevin Alejandro playing Detective Daniel Espinoza, Rachael Harris playing Dr. Linda Martin, and Lesley-Ann Brandt playing the role of Mazikeen.

Actor Aimee Garcia joined the cast as Ella Lopez at the start of season two. Also, the series filmed in Vancouver relocated its filming locations to Los Angeles after the end of season two.

Premise

The storyline of Lucifer revolves around Lucifer Morningstar, an outcast and rebellious Angel from Heaven. Morningstar, tired of punishing people in Hell, rebels against God and abandons his throne to settle in Los Angeles. He runs a nightclub in LA called Lux.

Lucifer lands himself in a murder investigation and chances to meet Detective Chloe Decker, whom he helps solve the case using his manipulation powers.

After completing the investigation, Chloe invites him to join the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), an invitation he readily accepts.

Lucifer, Chloe, and LAPD solve supernatural crimes and bond over investigations throughout the series.

Reception

The pilot of Lucifer screened at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2015 and met with positive reviews from the audience.

Critics gave mixed reviews for the debut season, but the following seasons fetched positive ratings. Tom Ellis’s performance as Morningstar earned him praises from the critics.

Although Lucifer got mixed reviews, the series initially had a high viewership, and the show’s ratings were low, prompting Fox to cancel the series after three seasons.

After Netflix picked up Lucifer in season four, the show saw a revival in ratings. Lucifer was one of the shows that earned Netflix high viewership across the globe.

Accolades

Although the show did not win any major awards, it received nominations in various categories.

Tom Ellis received a nomination in the Breakout Star category at the Teen Choice Awards in 2016. Lucifer also received a nomination in the Breakout Show category the same year.

Lucifer received nominations for People’s Choice Awards, Saturn Awards, Dragon Awards, Critics Choice Super Awards, and Primetime Emmy Awards.

For his character of Morningstar, Ellis won the Best Bisexual Representation by a Lead Character – Male in 2017 and 2018.
