Who is Jimi Hendrix?

James Marshall Hendrix, aka Jimi Hendrix, was a famous guitarist and singer. Although he had a short career, he is considered one of the most influential guitarists. He is named the “greatest instrumentalist” by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Before becoming a musician, Hendrix was in the U.S. Army. After being discharged, he formed a band to pursue his musical ambitions. Between 1962 and 1965, he played several gigs for the Isley Brothers, Little Richard, and Ike & Tina Turner.

In 1965, he played for Curtis Knight & The Squires and Richard in New York City. Due to Hendrix’s uniqueness, he was regarded as a trademark in music by both fans and music directors.

Jimi Hendrix Early Life

He was born in Seattle, Washington, on November 27, 1942. He had Irish and African American ancestry and was the first of five children in his family and shared a close relationship with his brother Leon. His other siblings were Joseph, Pamela, and Kathy.

Hendrix acquired his first guitar at the age of 15. He practised every day for hours while learning from other experienced guitarists. Blues artists such as Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and others were his primary inspiration.

His first band was the Velvetones, and his first gig was with an unnamed band. Later, he joined the Rocking Kings and performed at various venues.

In 1961, he was in the U.S. Army. However, he was discharged the next year and allowed to pursue his musical ambitions. He settled in Nashville, Tennessee, and performed at various gigs. He also played for multiple artists.

In 1966, he moved to England, and within a few months, he earned three U.K. top ten hits: The Wind Cries Mary, Purple Haze, and Hey Joe. He became popular in the U.S. after performing at the Monterey Pop Festival.

In 1968, he released his third and final album Electric Ladyland, a big hit. It ranked no.1 in the U.S.

Hendrix was one of the first guitarists to use tone-altering effect units in rock music. He was also the first artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in his recordings. He has received several awards throughout his career.

He died on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27. His cause of death was a barbiturate overdose.
