Black Veil Brides
Black Veil Brides have a striking dark gothic image and a sound that draws inspiration from metalcore, shock rock, punk, and glam metal.
The Ohio rockers emerged in 2006 and quickly became alt-metal darlings with narrative-driven, chart-topping efforts such as Set the World on Fire (2011), the ambitious rock opera Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones (2013), Vale (2018), and Phantom Tomorrow (2021).
Black Veil Brides was formed in Cincinnati in 2006, primarily as the idea of vocalist Andy Biersack (aka Andy Six). The band went through numerous lineup modifications during their first few years together while gaining label attention with two EPs: Sex & Hollywood in 2007 and Never Give In.
They eventually relocated to Los Angeles, where they finalized their lineup and began work on their debut full-length album. The group refined its image and sound, touring with bands such as Eyes Set to Kill and From First to Last, after bringing together guitarist Jinxx (formerly of the Dreaming), guitarist Jake Pitts, bassist Ashley Purdy, and drummer Sandra Alvarenga.

Message and Lyrics
The lyrics of Black Veil Brides have addressed critical issues for people who feel like outcasts in society. Ashley, the band’s bassist, stated in an interview about the message the band sends to its listeners:
“We want you to believe in yourself and not let anyone else tell you otherwise. We advocate for the marginalized and disenfranchised. We welcome anything strange, unusual, or one-of-a-kind. So basically, you should stand up for yourself, have fun, and live your life the way you want.”
Name of the Band
Purdy explains the meaning of the band’s name as well:
“Black Veil Brides” is a term used by Roman Catholics to describe when a woman marries into the church and gives up all of life’s pleasures to devote her life to God.
She is then referred to as a Black Veil Bride. Like being in a rock band, you have to give up many things to pursue what you’re passionate about or believe.
It also has a positive and negative dichotomy. Getting married could be the happiest time in one’s life. The polar opposite of that would be attending a loved one’s funeral in one’s life. It all fits together nicely for a dark and heavy rock band.
