Abbreviated as A7X, Avenged Sevenfold is a heavy metal band from California. Avenged Sevenfold came into existence in 1999.
The current band members include the lead vocalist M. Shadows, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance, drummer Brooks Wackerman and bassist Johnny Christ.
Formation
Band members James Sullivan, Matt Sander, and Matt Wendt formed Avenged Sevenfold in March 1999. The band’s name derives its inspiration from the Bible story of Abel and Cain.
Zachary Baker joined the band shortly after its formation.
Musical Career
The band ‘Avenged Sevenfold’ is synonymous with dramatic album covers and merchandise imagery and its diverse rock music.
A7X released their debut studio album titled ‘Sounding The Seventh Trumpet’ in 2001. They re-released their debut album in January 2002, after ending their record label contract with Good Life Recordings. They inked a new contract with Hopeless Records.
The genre of their debut album was metalcore, which they continued in their second studio album as well. Their second studio album, ‘Waking the Fallen,’ was released in August 2003.
A7X quit the deal with Hopeless Records and inked a new contract with Warner Brothers Records in 2003. This deal with Warner Brothers Records was the band’s first major-label deal.
Avenged Sevenfold released their third studio album ‘City of Evil’ in 2005. With this album, A7X also changed its music style. They adapted the hard rock and heavy metal genre.
‘City of Evil’ recorded a sale of 30000 copies within a week of its release. Moreover, the album debuted at number 30 on the Billboard 200.
The lead single from the album titled ‘Bat Country’ reached the number 2 position on the Billboard Rock Charts.
In October 2007, the band released two tribute albums titled ‘Strung Out on Avenged Sevenfold: Bat Wings and Broken Wings’ and ‘Strung Out on Avenged Sevenfold: The String Tribute.’
A7x released their fourth studio album titled ‘Avenged Sevenfold’ in 2007. The album sold over 90000 copies at the start and debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200. Four singles from the album were released- ‘Almost Easy,’ ‘Critical Acclaim,’ ‘Dear God,’ and ‘Afterlife.’
For a brief period, the band thought of disbanding following the death of their drummer James Sullivan in December 2009. However, they chose to continue with drummer Mike Portnoy.
Their fifth studio album ‘Nightmare’ released in 2010, debuted at the number one position on the Billboard 200. ‘Nightmare’ was the band’s first number-one debut album.
Following the exit of drummer Mike Portney, drummer Arin Ilejay joined the band as their drummer and featured on the band’s sixth studio album released in 2013.
A7X released their sixth studio album titled ‘Hail to the King’ in 2013. The album charted at the number-one position on the Billboard 200 and several other music charts.
Brooks Wackerman replaced Arin Ilejay as the band’s drummer in 2014.
The release of their seventh album, ‘The Stage,’ in October 2016 came as a surprise to the fans. The album debuted at the number 4 position on the Billboard 200. The genre of the album was progressive metal.

Over the years, Avenged Sevenfold has sold over 8 million copies globally and has been the recipient of numerous awards.
They have five platinum album certifications from the RIAA.
A7X ranked 47th on the Loudwire’s Top 50 Metal Bands list.
