Who is Stevie Ray Vaughan?
Stevie Ray Vaughan was also known as Stephen Ray Vaughan and one of the best and most influential guitarists of all time. He was famous as the frontman of the blues rock trio Double Trouble and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Although Vaughan’s mainstream career was short-lived, he was considered one of the pioneering figures in the history of blues music.
Stevie Ray Vaughan Early Life
Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 3, 1954. As a child, he was timid and insecure. He mostly had a troubled childhood because of his alcoholic father.
Inspired by his elder brother Jimmie Vaughan, he started playing the guitar at seven. He dropped out of high school to pursue a musical career and shifted to Austin. There he started playing at various local clubs.
In 1978, he joined Double Trouble with Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon. Initially, Double Trouble was part-time, but it soon became a popular act in Texas.
In 1982, he got the opportunity to perform at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival. There he got noticed by David Bowe, who offered him the chance to play the guitar on the album Let’s Dance.
Later, John Hammond contacted him, who got him and his band to sign a contract with Epic Records. This contract completely changed the band’s fate through mainstream success.
Vaughan and his band members released their debut album, Texas Flood. It was a massive hit, pushing them up the success ladder, and it came along with a series of concert tours and television appearances. During the 1980s, Vaughan became the lead figure in his band.
Despite all the success, Vaughan struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. His professional and personal life suffered because he could not handle the pressure. After completing his rehabilitation, he began touring in 1986.
He dropped his fourth and last album, In Step, in 1989. It ranked 33 in the United States and was one of the most successful albums of his career. This album catapulted his fame and success overnight and made him an international star.
In 1990, Vaughan met a tragic end in a helicopter crash. He was returning with four others after his performance at Alpine Valley Music Theatre. The Pilot’s error was the reason for the collision.
