If the past era was an era of rock bands and heavy metal music, the current generation has seen the rise to prominence of many pop bands, including all-girl groups.
One such popular all-girl band is the British band named Little Mix. Often called one of the best girl groups, Little Mix is one of Britain’s biggest-selling acts, with an astounding sale of 65 million records worldwide.
The group makes music- mainly pop, dance-pop, and R&B genres. Their music has Latin pop, tropical house, and electronic music influences. In contrast, the lyrics have bold themes like gender equality, women empowerment, sexism, LGBTQ+ rights, and body positivity.
Band Members
Initially a four-member band, Little Mix consisted of group members- Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Jesy Nelson.
Jesy Nelson quit Little Mix in 2020.
Formation
The X Factor judges rightfully deserve the credit for the formation of Little Mix. The singing reality show also deserves to be credited for the band’s success, for it was after winning the show in 2011 the band gained popularity.
All the four band members had auditioned as solo singers but couldn’t clear the first boot camp challenge. Later, the judges set them up in separate groups during the group boot camp stage.
As fate would have it, both the groups ended up being unsuccessful. The judges selected two members from each group and formed a four-member band named Rhythmix.
Rhythmix officially became Little Mix on October 28, 2011.
Little Mix won the X Factor on December 11, 2011. It was the first-ever group to have won the UK version of the show and the second group to have won across the franchise globally.
Music Career
After winning the singing reality show, their debut single was a cover version of the Damien Rice song, ‘Cannonball.’ On December 18, 2011, the song topped the UK Singles Chart.
Apart from Cannonball in 2011, Little Mix has had four number-one singles ruling the UK Singles Chart- Wings (2012), Black Magic (2015), Shout Out to My Ex (2016), and Sweet Melody (2021).
The girl band has released one compilation album and six studio albums throughout their career. Their debut studio album, ‘ DNA,’ came out in 2012, Salute in 2013, Get Weird in 2015, Glory Days in 2016, LM5 in 2018, Confetti in 2020, and Between Us in 2021. All of the albums reached the top five on the UK Albums Chart.
DNA, the band’s debut studio album, is the highest-charting entry by a British girl band for a debut album on the US Billboard 200. Their fourth album, Glory Days, managed to stay for 173 weeks on the UK Album Charts. Glory Days holds the record for the ‘longest-charting girl band album inside the top 40 on the UK Albums Chart.’
Accolades
Often told to be one of the most extraordinary girl bands ever, Forbes magazine named them one of the most influential music artists across Europe.
Little Mix won the ‘Brit Award for British Group’ in 2021. The band has received other awards, namely, seven MTV Europe Music Awards, six Global Awards, four Glamour Awards, two Japanese Gold Disc Awards, two Brit awards, and one iHeartRadio Music Award.
Future
Band member Jesy Nelson quit the band in December 2020, citing mental health issues. She began pursuing a solo career by releasing a solo single titled ‘Boyz’ featuring Nicki Minaj.
After almost two years without their fourth member, the girl group announced an indefinite hiatus in 2022. According to them, this break is for rest and their solo careers.
